About Me
My Story
Life is hard. I think everyone can agree on that, right?
I found that comedy has been my best coping mechanism, defense mechanism, offensive mechanism… just a mechanism for survival.
My parents moved from South Korea and got married in the states. Growing up, it was really confusing because everything about our household was traditionally Korean but when I walked out of our house, it was another country. I had to try to navigate and figure out at a young age what it means to be American (I still haven’t figured it out, but I think I’m getting there).
Fast forward to high school and after my brother was born -
My parents got me a new car. As someone who watched my parents struggle with the language, the culture, raising children (mostly me because I had an attitude), discrimination, and racism… This meant a lot to me. I went to high school with a bunch of rich, Asian kids (80% was ethnically Korean - I might be making up the number but we were the majority). Not Crazy Rich Asians status but definitely upper middle class. 16/17-year-old me vowed that my parents wouldn’t pay for my college tuition if I could help it. Insert here the flyer from the California Army National Guard. I joined the Army to pay for school.
I figured the best that I could do for my parents and their sacrifices to make it in the states was to not be a leech in college. You know, figure out the rest of adulthood on my own. Had my parents not broken their backs for me to step on to get a leg up in life, I don’t know who or what I would be right now.
In the recent 3 years of my life, I started pursuing comedy. Because first of all, who doesn’t like laughing? And to be able to give joy makes me happy. It’s not just for altruistic reasons I swear. It’s definitely for selfish reasons and the instant gratification when people laugh at my jokes. It’s a painful process but the high after doing a great set are priceless.
I’ll be adding more later… until then, enjoy!
